WATER TALKS — Perspectives from Sierra Gorda
[Documentary & Short film series]

This series of five short films and a documentary about the Sierra Gorda Biosphere Reserve were taken during an expedition of a Fulbright Specialist Expedition realized in September 2021. This project shows the perceptions about water from people who live on this reserve — from the bigger towns like Jalpan de Sierra to small communities in the upper mountains. We try to involve the audience in the atmosphere of water scarcity to promote them a moment of reflection. Many of the issues and solutions that people from Sierra Gorda are facing and proposing could be expected in other regions worldwide.

‘Water, a common subject to all.

Through the Fulbright Specialist Program, the Autonomous University of Querétaro carried out an eight-day expedition collecting audiovisual material and promoting workshops on the use and care of water and wetlands in the Sierra Gorda Biosphere Reserve. The project directly involved around 300 people from rural communities, government representatives, civil society, and academia from four mountain municipalities: Arroyo Seco, Jalpan de Serra, Landa de Matamoros, and Pinal de Amoles.

The impression is solidified: there is an urgent need to develop sustainable water management strategies that preserve freshwater ecosystem functions and services while reducing water-related risks to humans and conserving biodiversity. This series of short films seek to know the stories of the residents of Sierra Gorda about water, the challenges they suffer, the solutions they propose, and the places they remember. ‘Water Talks — Perspectives from Sierra Gorda‘ is an immersion and a breath at the same time in this great conflict over water in which humanity is immersed.

If you ask me, yes, wetlands are a great help!’
